There once was a king who loved to eat baby kangaroos. He occasionally sent his hunters to hunt and kill every baby kangaroo they could find. He would cut them into little pieces, roast them on the fire, and eat them with pepper sauce. It was his favorite food.
One day, the king was desperately hungry, and suddenly, he was craving roasted baby kangaroo very badly. He called his servant and said to him,
"Go to the animal kingdom and tell them I'm hosting a large dinner party tonight at the palace. Only mother kangaroos are invited, and they should come with their babies. There will be a great feast and gifts for everyone."
Six hours later, night had fallen, quite a number of mother kangaroos with their babies trooped into the palace for the dinner party. The king howled with joy on seeing the large number of baby kangaroos. He rushed and told his guards,
"Listen to me, go in there with guns and snatch all the babies from their mothers! Shoot and kill any mother that refuses to let go of her baby! I'll have enough babies to eat every day for about 40 days."
Without hesitation, the armed guards barged into the room and began nabbing the babies from their mothers, threatening to kill them if they didn't give away their babies. They cried and pleaded but to no avail.
However, there was one mother kangaroo who was without her baby. The guards shouted at her fiercely.
"Where is your baby? Tell us where!"
She cringed back and started to cry,
"I didn't come with my baby, I swear! I left my baby at home!"
After a brief argument, the guards got confused and frustrated with her and told her to leave immediately. However, as soon as the mother kangaroo left the palace, she ran into the bush where she pulled out her healthy baby from a pouch on her belly. She smiled and said,
"I saved you, my child. This is what happened – when I went outside to throw some trash out, I overheard the king ordering his men to abduct all the baby kangaroos. I quickly took a knife and cut open my belly to make a pouch where I hid you. That's a smart move, isn't it? Listen, the king is dangerous, the world is now a dangerous place, so henceforth, you'll always stay in my pouch until you're an adult."
