The Cockroach Theory for Self-Development
React or Respond? The Cockroach Theory's Key to Peaceful Living
One day at a restaurant, a cockroach suddenly landed on a lady. She panicked, screamed, and started jumping around trying to get rid of it. Her reaction spread to her group, and soon everyone was in a frenzy. Eventually, the cockroach flew onto another lady, who also freaked out.
A waiter rushed over to help. As the cockroach landed on him, he remained calm. He observed it for a moment, then gently grabbed it and threw it out of the restaurant.
While sipping my coffee and watching this unfold, I started thinking: was it the cockroach causing all the chaos? If so, why was the waiter so composed? He handled the situation without any drama, while the others panicked.
I realized it wasn’t the cockroach that caused the disturbance—it was how the ladies reacted to it. The cockroaches were the same, but their inability to stay calm created chaos.
This made me reflect on my own life. It’s not my father, boss, ’s, or spouse’s shouting that upsets me, but my inability to handle the disturbance it causes. It's not traffic jams that bother me, but how I react to them.
The lesson? It’s not the problem itself, but how we respond to it that matters. The waiter responded thoughtfully, while the ladies reacted instinctively. In life, reacting leads to chaos, while responding thoughtfully leads to peace.
A happy person isn’t happy because everything in their life is perfect. They’re happy because their attitude toward everything is right.
Stay blessed.

Back in my thirties as I was developing my own method of mediation and prayer I learned a number of methods, a combination of the St. Ignasius Spiritual Exercises and Wayne Dyer. The one quote I remember form Wayne is, "Do not let what other people say and do effect the way you think and feel"
So true! I have had similar thoughts in response to a cancer diagnosis and hope I can (metaphorically) throw the cockroach out of MY place of business, also!
